What do you want to shoot with it, and how? The
GoPro covers a very wide angle of view, one so wide
that it is easy to do compactly, sharply, and with
relatively little edge magnification only with a
fisheye lens rather than with one with rectangular
perspective. If you are not shooting in sand, snow,
under water, etc., there are several small HD
camcorders that shoot a narrower angle of view
that have mic inputs (as does the GoPro...), but
they are much larger and heavier, and they cannot
be so easily attached to things that move as the
GoPro can be...

I tried the GoPro camera but the distorted view and lack of a view screen
were deal killers for me. I returned the GoPro and picked up a Panasonic
DMC-TS3 camera:

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-TS3-Waterproof-Stabilized-2-7-
Inch/dp/B004KKZ0KG/ref=sr_1_3

It doesn't have the quality of my TM700, of course, but it's tough and
waterproof. I have used it underwater while snorkeling, used it to take
video on a zip line, and seriously beat it up riding on Jet ski's. It has
worked wonderfully.

I use my TM700 camcorder when I can, but grab the TS3 if I expect rain,
water exposure at the beach, rough handling, or underwater. Sometimes I
grab the TS3 when I don't want to haul my full camcorder around and just
want something I can just stick in my pocket.

The fisheye view of the GoPro is useful for action, whereas
a super-wide rectangular perspective lens would be annoying
with rapid direction-changes of the camera, since that
would result in rapid size changes of objects within the
frame area (that is a good reason, in addition to practical
"design" aspects relating to the required size of the optics,
why we also see in "fisheye"-perspective). Also, with a
fisheye, with the tilting of the camera up or down and back
and forth, the parallelism of lines that are parallel in the
subjects is better maintained, instead of having them wildly
shifting out of parallel in the image. Fisheye-perspective
also makes practical having extremely wide angles of view,
ones that would be impossible to achieve using rectangular
perspective as 180 degrees is approached (and I once owned
a fisheye that exceeded 180 degrees, going out to 220 degrees
and it could therefore "see" things behind the plane of
focus[!]). Fisheyes can be your friend...!;-)

Also, while tiny, the GoPro does have an available (for about
$80) a rear screen accessory for the camera...

Neat! Good suggestion. Apparently, also, the recommended
yearly replacement of the seals by Panasonic is now only
about $50, which makes it more practical than formerly...

Me and "action" do not belong in the same sentence... :)

Actually, it looks like there's an even newer model TS5:

Things are always changing... :)

Hmm... First I've ever heard of that. I've had the TS3 for a few years now
and am still on the original seals. So far I haven't had a problem. I
think I would spring for a new camera if the TS3 leaks instead of replacing
seals.

Thanks David,

Succinctly put.

I was thinking of something for in studio video, in my audio studio. So
mostly musicians.

The GoPro III has three levels of "Zoom". The narrowest is still pretty
wide; however, there is less distortion with this setting. The quality of
the images is really remarkable for such a small camera. I've included
GoPro shots in the last several videos I've produced, mostly quick shots
to establish location/environment. It's low light capabilities can't
match better cameras with larger imagers, but it's not bad. Swann also
makes a similar size camera, a little less expensive, and with an even
narrower max zoom. If you want to see the whole room, shoot the studio
unattended, either camera will work. Barrel distortion to some degree
just comes with the package.

Ty, as I recall you're a Mac user so I don't know if this will be of any help but there's a product from proDAD called ProDRENALIN specifically designed for cameras like the GoPro that claims to remove fisheye, stabilize, de-noise, etc.
More info and a trial version are at http://www.prodad.com/home/products/actioncam/300582316,l-us.html
